Main streets
Detroit Avenue, Clifton Boulevard and Madison Avenue began as streetcar routes, which opened in 1893, 1903 and 1916 respectively, according to the Lakewood Historical Society. Much of the city's commercial and apartment building grew up along them, so a lot of Lakewood's older multi-unit stock sits within a block or two of those streets.
